Their eyes met.
In that fleeting second, it felt as though all the ambient noise in the room had completely vanished.
Max closed the distance with heavy, measured steps. He stopped in front of them and stared down at Felicia's exhausted, pale face. Sensing a shift in the atmosphere, Felicia slowly opened her eyes and found Max towering over her.
She jolted in surprise. "What..."
Max gazed down at her with mysterious dark eyes. He then shifted his attention to Jeremy. "Mr. Milman truly is a benevolent man."
Jeremy maintained a perfectly stoic expression. "Thank you for the compliment."
As his words hung in the air, a brief, suffocating silence fell over them. An invisible, heavy pressure seemed to radiate throughout the space.
Everyone else in the clinic cast uneasy glances in their direction. Even from a distance, the sheer tension caused the bystanders to subconsciously lower their voices.
Felicia was just about to say something to break the ice when Savannah rushed into the room. "Felicia."
Savannah spared a quick glance at Max before taking the empty seat beside her friend. She instinctively reached out to feel Felicia's forehead. "How did you end up catching a fever so suddenly?"
"I will be fine after a couple of days of rest," Felicia murmured.
Savannah looked up at Jeremy. "I finished all my work for the day. I can take over taking care of Felicia from here."
Jeremy nodded in agreement. He offered Felicia a few parting words of advice and then stood up to leave the clinic.
Felicia looked up at Max. "Savannah is going to take care of me. You should go back to your work."
Max did not linger either. He turned on his heel and walked out the doors.
Jeremy and Max both got into their respective cars and drove off, one right after the other.
Across the street, Holden sat inside a luxurious black sedan. He rested his head lazily against his hand as he watched the two men exit the clinic through his tinted window. A scoff escaped his lips. "They came out so quickly," he muttered to himself.
Felicia sat through her IV drip for over an hour until her headache finally subsided.
Savannah drove her back to the West Hill Residence.
Ava had called her earlier. After learning she was sick, Ava had insisted Felicia come stay at the family home so she could be properly looked after.
