Felicia was incredibly curious about him, and it seemed she really needed to find time to ask him out to meet in person.
Colton suddenly hesitated, as if he did not know how to bring the subject up. Finally, he spoke. "Actually, your mother sent this."
Felicia was stunned at first, but she quickly realized which mother he meant. To her, however, her biological mother had become entirely like a stranger.
Her mother and brother were like two parallel lines in her and her father's lives, never meant to intersect again. To be able to afford such an expensive diamond ring meant they were living very well.
But after completely losing contact for so many years, this sudden, expensive gift stirred absolutely no emotion in her heart.
She closed the box and asked, "Why did she suddenly contact you, Dad? And why send such an expensive gift?"
Colton explained, "Max made your relationship public. Your mother must have seen the news and recognized you right away. She reached out to me. I originally told her it was not necessary, but I never expected her to just mail it over. I thought I would see if you liked it."
Felicia handed the box back to Colton. "Dad, it is better to return it."
Colton tried to persuade her. "It is a token of your mother's affection, Felicia. You should just accept it."
Felicia's grip on the box tightened.
For so many years, her mother and brother had vanished without a trace. There was a time when she desperately yearned for them to return, hoping their family could live together just like before.
That was why she had been so resistant when her father first got together with Ava. She felt Ava was trying to steal her mother's place.
But her years of waiting had ultimately amounted to nothing.
Now, thinking of her mother and brother again, her calm heart inevitably rippled with emotion. Was it resentment or hatred? Perhaps she had felt those things once.
