After she hung up, Danielle had just stepped out of her office building when she received a text from Kirsten.

“No dinner meetings tonight, so I'm crashing your place for dinner. And I get to see Niki!”

Danielle stared at the message, a flicker of hesitation in her heart. Kirsten still didn't know about her recent entanglement with Alexander, and if the two of them met, it would surely cause another unnecessary misunderstanding. She thought for a moment before sending Alexander a text: “My friend is coming over for dinner. Can you come half an hour later?”

He replied almost immediately with a simple “OK,” with no extra words.

Once home, Danielle helped Niki finish her homework and then whipped up a few simple dishes. Just as she was setting the food on the table, the doorbell rang. Kirsten frowned, then smiled and patted her hand reassuringly. “Don’t you worry. The security in this gated community is top-notch, with guards patrolling 24/7. Sammie even has people keeping a discreet watch. Besides, you’ve got me!”
