Alexander stared at her, his gaze intense. The hand hanging at his side clenched into a fist, unseen. His heart, which had been dormant for so long, began to pound in his chest.
His Adam's apple bobbed. “If you’re willing to listen—”
“Of course I am.”
Alexander paused. He looked at her, his throat moving as if to speak, but the words he’d been holding back for so long remained unsaid. He pursed his lips and lowered his gaze, his fingers brushing against the project file on the table as his tone returned to its usual composure.
“About the follow-up tests for Project 07, we need to adjust the timeline.”
Danielle reined in her emotions and nodded. “Right. I was about to tell you. The partners want the final data three days early.”
They quickly dove into work, discussing optimizations for technical parameters and the coordination of testing procedures. The delicate atmosphere from moments before was replaced by professional discourse, yet an subtle undercurrent of rapport remained between their words. Alexander would occasionally look up and see the focused line of Danielle’s profile as she took notes.
By the time they finished, it was already six in the evening. Danielle gathered her files, remembering her daughter’s request from that morning.
She turned to Alexander, her tone tentative. “Niki mentioned wanting to go to KFC today. Do you… want to join us?”
The hand Alexander was using to close his laptop paused, his fingertips resting on the metal casing for a few seconds. He rarely took part in such normal family activities. In the years since he and Danielle had separated, he had missed so much of Niki’s childhood.
His hesitation lasted only a moment before he looked up at Danielle. “Okay.”
That single word made the tension in Danielle’s chest ease, and a genuine smile spread across her face.

The drive to Danielle’s apartment was quiet but not awkward. Danielle occasionally shared a funny story about Niki, mentioning how she’d drawn a family portrait where he was tall and strong, but only shown as a blurry silhouette.
Still unsure, Niki asked, “Really?” A thrill of excitement bubbled up inside her. Could she really call him Daddy?
Looking at his daughter, Alexander felt a sudden pang of regret. He owed this child so much.
He took a step forward, trying to make his voice as gentle as possible. “If you want me to, Daddy will go with you.”
Niki bit her lip, a little shy. “Daddy…” The word felt foreign and awkward on her tongue. She had never called him that before.
Alexander ruffled her hair. “Yes?”
“I want fries, and Original Recipe chicken…”
Calvin tactfully excused himself, glancing at the harmonious family scene with a look of relief before he left.
