Danielle sighed. “But you know what the situation is like. The rumors are getting worse, and I’m really afraid they’ll end up affecting Niki.” She was afraid she might have just agreed out of desperation. A mother’s love for her child could cloud her judgment.
“Don’t panic. I actually have an idea,” Kirsten’s voice suddenly became cheerful. “You’ve forgotten about Gian, haven’t you? I’ll have him come over and play the part with you. You can announce that you’ve just started dating and plan to get married once things are stable. He’s a much better fit than River.”
Danielle was taken aback. “Gian? Wouldn’t that be too much trouble for him?” she hesitated. “He works out of town, making a special trip just for this…”
“What trouble? I’ll just explain it to him, and he’ll be happy to help,” Kirsten interjected confidently. “Gian is incredibly loyal. When he hears you’re being bullied, he won’t just stand by and watch. Besides, it’s more believable for you two to be dating. River works at the same place as you, which could start gossip. You’ve known Gian for so long, it feels natural. Plus, it’s a good way to fend off River’s advances so he doesn’t keep his hopes up. It saves everyone from an awkward situation later.”
Thinking it over, Danielle realized it made sense. Gian had no conflicts of interest, and his reputation was clean. Having him play the part would quell the rumors without creating complications for anyone. It would also be a subtle way to show River that there was no possibility between them. It was a perfect solution.
Still, Danielle felt a little embarrassed. “But he’d have to make a special trip and pretend with us.”
“Don’t be so formal with me!” Kirsten laughed. “I’ll call Gian right now and explain everything. If he agrees, he can come to Nexus Prime in the next couple of days. You two can meet up and finalize the details. You just stay home and spend time with Niki. Leave the rest to me.”
After hanging up, Danielle leaned back against the seat, watching the familiar neighborhood streets pass by outside the window.
When she got home, Niki was on the living room floor, playing with building blocks. As soon as she saw Danielle, she dropped her blocks and ran over, hugging her leg. “Mommy, how come you’re home so early today?”
