The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 981

Danielle held Niki’s hand, a new picture book and Niki's favorite teddy bear tucked into a bag in her other hand, along with a pair of tiny baby socks she couldn't resist buying.

One day, while Danielle was helping Niki build with blocks, the doorbell rang unexpectedly.

She got up to answer it and found Lorie standing on her doorstep, dressed in an elegant dress and holding a gilded envelope. Her smile was perfectly measured. “Chief Engineer Crawford, I hope I’m not disturbing you?”

Lorie held up the envelope. “Alex and I have set the date for our engagement party for next weekend. I wanted to deliver the invitation personally. I do hope you can come.”

Danielle accepted the envelope, her fingertips brushing against the lettering, but she felt nothing. She gave a faint nod. “Thank you. I’ll be there.”

Seeing her calm demeanor, a flicker of disappointment crossed Lorie’s eyes, but she maintained her smile. “Well, I won’t keep you from your daughter. I’ll see you then.” With that, she turned and left.

Danielle closed the door and opened the envelope. Inside was a beautifully designed invitation, announcing the engagement of Alexander and Lorie, the date and location clearly printed.

Niki padded over and pointed at the photo on the invitation. “Mommy, is that Daddy and Aunt Lorie? Are they getting married?”

Danielle stroked her daughter’s hair. “It’s an engagement party,” she said softly. “Do you want to go?”

Niki tilted her head, thought for a moment, and then shook it. A strange, unhappy feeling settled in her chest, and her nose and eyes began to prickle with tears. Maybe Daddy didn't really love her after all.

She pursed her lips. “No, I want to play with uncle Gian.”

Danielle managed a smile and ruffled Niki’s hair. “Mommy and Daddy are divorced. He’s free to marry whomever he wants, but he’ll always be your father.”

A warm laugh came from the other end of the line. “Alright. I’ll pick you up, and we’ll go together.”

After hanging up, Danielle had just placed the invitation on the coffee table when her phone rang again. It was Alexander. Lately, they had spoken more often than they ever did during their marriage.

She hesitated for a moment before answering.

“Danielle.”

Alexander’s voice came through the line, cool and detached. “I don’t want you at my engagement party. You’re not welcome. And don’t bring Niki.”

Danielle’s hand tightened around her phone as a cold, cynical smile touched her lips. Lorie invites her, and then Alexander calls to un-invite her. What kind of act were they putting on?
