Lorenzo’s POV
Half of Aria’s face swelled instantly. The blood from her temple and the handprint from my slap merged into one dark smear. In that moment she understood completely:
I was gone. Past reason. Past talk.
Her pupils shook. And then survival kicked in.
She suddenly twisted her body, elbows sharp, nails clawing at my wrist. She shrieked like an animal and forced her way out of my grip.
“Lorenzo-LET GO OF ME!”
Her scream echoed inside the enclosed car. Her fist slammed my chest. Her knee slammed my ribs. My breath staggered.
“Claire killed herself! She killed herself!” she screamed hysterically. “Why should I die for a woman I’ve only met a few times?!”
Her hair stuck to her blood streaked cheek. Her voice splintered with terror.
“She died because she COULD NOT GET OVER IT! Not because of me!”
She panted, chest heaving. Her voice sharpened into steel.
“I only told her the TRUTH. If it wasn’t for me, Claire would’ve lived the rest of her life fooled by YOU. You cheated. You lied. You played perfect husband like a saint. I HELPED her finally see her life was a lie!”
Her words exploded in my skull.
“Shut up.”
“No!” she screamed even louder. “A woman who can’t walk, who lost EVERYTHING for you and you still betrayed her, is there ANYTHING sadder than that?! I saved her from a life WORSE than death!”
My hand loosened.
Aria saw it. She saw the break inside me. And she struck even harder- verbally- like a knife pressing a wound deeper
“You think I killed her?!” she hissed. “You’re the REAL killer. Claire
didn’t know me. I was NOTHING to her. The one she loved- trusted- lived nineteen years with- was YOU.”
She jabbed her finger into my chest, blood dripping down her chin.
“You pushed her into hell. Not me.
Her voice sliced through every layer of denial left.
“You neglected her. You mocked her. You cheated. YOU broke her. YOU killed her.”
I stared at her, frozen.
She smirked cold.
