A soft laugh escaped her lips.
So it’s true—people in love really do become so careful, so tentative.
She remembered being the same way once.
She and her brother arrived together at the hospital. Yvette was sitting upright in bed, her gaze fixed on some distant point, but neither of them could tell what she was seeing.
“Yvette, are you feeling any better?” Silvia took a seat by her bedside.
She hadn’t even warmed the chair before Yvette pulled her into a fierce embrace.
Yvette clung to Silvia, pressing her face into Silvia’s shoulder—and suddenly, she broke down in sobs.
Through her tears, she choked out, “Silvia, he’s gone. He’s dead.”
Silvia froze for a moment.
It took a second for the words to register. Who was “he”? But thinking of who could affect Yvette so deeply, Silvia realized there was only one person it could be.
Her eyes flickered with concern.
She lifted a hand and gently patted Yvette’s back, her voice low and soothing. “Maybe it’s for the best. With him gone, there’s no one left to hurt you. You’re free now.”
No wonder Yvette had drunk herself into such a stupor last night.
Understanding dawned on Silvia.
Seeing the two women locked in such a tight embrace, Finn knew this wasn’t the time for him to speak.
After a few moments’ hesitation, he stepped out and waited in the hallway.
Silvia stayed with Yvette for a while, comforting her in the quiet room.
Twenty minutes passed before Silvia finally slipped out, quietly closing the door behind her.
Looking up, she found Finn standing stiffly right outside. She couldn’t help but smirk.
Oh.
Not a lover, then.
Still, losing her father was heartbreaking enough. No wonder she’d drunk so much last night—she must’ve been devastated.
Just as Finn was about to ask more, Silvia interrupted his thoughts. “As for anything else, you’ll have to ask her yourself. If she wants you to know, she’ll tell you.”
When it came to her best friend’s privacy, Silvia drew the line—even for her own brother.
But Finn was nothing if not persistent. He didn’t dare bother Yvette right now, so he shifted his attention to Silvia, trailing after her, hoping to catch any scraps of information about Yvette.
Just then, Silvia’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen, and seeing the caller ID, her elegant brows furrowed in concern.
Mr. Sanderson?
Why was he calling her now? Was something wrong?
