He could clearly tell the difference between Silvia and Nannie.
Silvia was someone he genuinely wanted to protect and cherish.
But Nannie? She was simply someone to whom he owed a debt.
The only reason he indulged Nannie was because her demands had always been trivial, and with her ongoing health issues, Kent didn’t want to make things more complicated.
“Silvia, the engagement party—it’s something I planned for you from the very beginning. Every detail, every arrangement, was done with your preferences in mind.” Kent’s voice was gentle, his gaze growing more earnest as he looked at Silvia. “There’s never been anyone else I wanted to marry but you.”
Silvia stared at him in a slight daze.
She frowned, struggling to make sense of Kent’s words. Just hearing it felt as if he had set his sights on her long ago, as if everything had always been preordained.
She pressed her lips together, then said, “Let’s just leave it at that. But if she ever shows up again, let’s get divorced.”
Before the wedding, she’d tolerated things for the sake of their arranged marriage.
But by now, she had given Kent more than enough time. If he still couldn’t deal with Nannie, then, to Silvia, this marriage was no different from her previous one with Shipley.
Her tone had turned cold. Kent looked at her deeply, then let out a slow breath.
He nodded, reaching out to gently pull Silvia into his arms, guiding her toward home. “Silvia, she won’t be back.”
This time, he would make sure Nannie stayed abroad for good.
Letting her live out her days quietly overseas was the least he could do to repay her father’s life-saving kindness.
......
The next day, Silvia received a call from the police station. She quickly gathered her things and headed over.
It was the same station as last time. When the officers saw her arrive, one waved her over politely. “Miss Ashford, we’ve identified the person from the surveillance footage. His name is Gray Jordan, a recent college graduate. It’s just him and his critically ill father at home.”
He was old enough to be held responsible for his actions now. Once the charges were pressed, prison would likely be his only option.
Gray shot Silvia a quick glance, then immediately lowered his head, pretending he knew nothing. His hands tightened nervously, his whole posture tense.
Silvia was about to ask a question, but the officers stopped her and led Gray into the interrogation room.
“Miss Ashford, this is a serious matter—it’s a criminal case now. Please don’t worry, we’ll get to the bottom of it.”
Silvia looked at the officers and decided to trust them.
She nodded, but didn’t leave, choosing instead to sit in the station and wait.
Nearly an hour passed before the door to the interrogation room finally opened. An officer handed Silvia a copy of the interview record, sighing as he gave her a brief summary.
“He’s young, couldn’t handle the stress of his father’s hospitalization. In the end, it was just a desperate attempt to lash out at the world.”
