That can’t be right.
Wasn’t Jewel still in Sylvaris? How could she suddenly show up in Capital City?
Could it be—she’s back?!
The thought made Silvia’s expression flicker. Her brows knitted in an anxious frown.
After everything that happened to Jewel abroad, did she really dare come back, knowing she could get arrested? And what reason would she even have to return now?
“I don’t know you,” Silvia said, her voice icy and measured, as if Jewel were a stranger to her.
Jewel let out a throaty laugh, then replied, “So I come all this way, and you’re not even planning to see me? Silvia, when you were little and burning with fever, who rushed you to the hospital? Have you forgotten all of that?”
She hadn’t always treated Silvia well, that much was true. But most of the time, Jewel had looked after her like a daughter—just a bit more strictly than most.
A shadow crossed Jewel’s eyes as she remembered the past. If only she’d kept Silvia by her side all these years… Maybe things would have turned out differently.
“I only know that the person who switched my life with Vianne’s is the real culprit.”
With that, Silvia hung up.
She stared at the stack of paperwork in front of her, determined to focus on work, but Jewel’s face kept flashing through her mind no matter how hard she tried to concentrate.
The whole afternoon slipped by without any real progress. By the time Silvia got home that night, a restless heaviness clung to her.
Kent noticed her mood the moment she walked in.
But now didn’t feel like the right time. She wasn’t ready to face Jewel, not just yet.
First, she needed to know what Jewel was up to. She couldn’t just walk in blind—otherwise, who knew what kind of trap she’d walk into?
Kent watched her thoughtfully, catching the conflicted look in her eyes. He gave a small, reassuring smile. “If you haven’t made up your mind, then why not act as if she never came back?”
“Alright.”
Silvia said it, but she knew the truth: after that phone call, she wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about Jewel.
Vianne had just wormed her way into the Ashford family, and now Jewel had come back right on her heels. What were those two really scheming?
