Kent’s gaze drifted to Silvia, lingering on her with an unreadable expression crossing his handsome face.
She hadn’t changed at all.
Still the kind of woman who swallowed every grievance, never letting the pain show.
Kent’s lips twitched as if he wanted to say something more, but his deep, steady voice finally broke the silence. “I’ll do everything I can to take care of Silvia. I promise.”
“You’d better,” Finn snapped, tossing the words out like stones. He lifted his glass and took a long, grim drink, his eyes hard and openly dissatisfied with Kent.
If Finn had known earlier that Kent had a woman like Silvia around him, he never would have agreed to this engagement.
After the toasts, the engagement party quietly wound down. Guests began to slip away, until only the two families remained.
The Parsons family were the first to leave. Lola, grasping Silvia’s hand tightly, faced Kent with a stern look. “You’re engaged, not married. Silvia will stay with her family for now.”
After what had happened today, there was no way they’d let Silvia leave with Kent. Besides, it was only an engagement; it was normal not to live together yet.
Kent’s brows lifted slightly, a hint of resignation flickering in his eyes. He nodded. “Of course. I’ll respect your wishes.”
Nannie’s sudden appearance had caught him off guard, and he had no argument against their decision.
“Come on, Silvia. Let’s go home,” Lola said, taking Silvia’s arm and leading her away without so much as another glance in Kent’s direction.
Kent watched them go, their figures retreating down the hall. He pressed his fingers to his brow, a rare look of exhaustion shadowing his features.
He pulled out his phone and called Lester. “How is she?”
Lester was a world-renowned psychiatrist—young, but with an impressive reputation. Most people couldn’t even get an appointment with him.
