Year Five: The Perfect Goodbye Plan novel Chapter 9

So, in the end, he told Vianne she didn’t care about it.

Silvia forced a bitter smile, lips twitching as she thanked him quietly.

Then she headed to Shipley’s office.

Vianne was there too.

They stood close together, so near that Vianne’s hair nearly brushed Shipley’s face.

They were poring over the same document.

The moment Silvia entered, Shipley straightened up first.

He turned to Vianne. “You can head back now.”

Vianne gave a soft reply, slipped out, and even closed the door gently behind her.

A strange tension settled over the office.

Silvia stared at the desk, silent.

Shipley, with his unnervingly handsome face, leaned in, slid an arm around her waist, and lifted her onto the desk. “Missed me?”

He rested his chin on her collarbone, letting out a quiet sigh.

Despite the intimacy, Silvia felt nothing but numbness.

The chill of the desk pressed into her back. Her eyes were clear, her voice cool. “What’s going on with Vianne?”

Shipley let go of her. “She lost her job. As a friend, I pulled a few strings for her.”

Silvia fixed him with a silent stare, not looking away until Shipley, growing impatient, clicked his tongue. Only then did she speak, her tone icy. “So you’re letting her take the position I worked so hard to get? I went through hell for that promotion—”

Shipley’s relaxed expression tightened, the air around him growing frosty as he cut her off.

“Silvia, don’t be difficult.” His voice was cool. “I’ve never seen you care about this job that much. Why pick a fight with Vianne? This company has plenty of positions for you to choose from.”

How could it possibly be the same?

A dull ache settled in Silvia’s chest as she stared at his indifferent gaze, then let out a sudden, heavy sigh.

“Fine,” she said. “She can have it.”
