Angeline's exquisite face was filled with panic. "Sister, I was the one who forced him to sneak me out of the palace today. He had nothing to do with it. Please do not punish him." She was pleading with her eyes. She would not let him be thrown into jail when he was the one who saved her from the dragon.
Darryl knelt on the ground and pretended to be scared. "Your Majesty, please forgive me." If it were possible, he wished he did not have to kneel, but he had to do it for the sake of the Holy Jade Scripture.
The Queen raised an eyebrow at the sight of Angeline begging for mercy on behalf of Darryl. "Angeline, you should know better than that."
Then she looked at Darryl and said, "Even if you forced him, he still should not have sneaked you out of the palace." Her voice was low and majestic. She would not let Angeline convince her to go off her usual style of reward and punishment.
Angeline panicked even more. "Sister, if you really want to punish someone, punish Dennis instead! He's the worst!" At the mention of Dennis' name, she started to tremble with anger. That shameless b*stard deserted her!
"What does all this have to do with Dennis?" the Queen asked with surprise.
"It's like that, Sister…" Angeline walked forward and held the Queen's arm. She told her everything in detail about what had happened that day. Nearing the end, she could not even keep the anger out of her voice. "He swore he would protect me, but when the dragon appeared, he ran off with his men, leaving Darren and me to the dragon. If it were not for Darren's knowledge of the beast's language, we wouldn't be standing in front of you now."
At that, the Queen's beautiful face became cold. "Very well, I understand now. I will interrogate Dennis tomorrow." Then she turned toward Darryl, she said, "You may leave."
"Thank you, Your Majesty!" Darryl said quickly. He breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Angeline with eyes full of gratitude. Even though Angeline only wanted to have fun, she came to his rescue in the nick of time. He quickly exited the room.
"Sister!" Angeline said, still holding on to the Queen's arm. "Darren is good at his job. He was brave and protected me the whole day. Why don't you let him be my personal guard?"
The Queen rolled her eyes at Angeline. "I should be punishing you for sneaking out of the palace! We'll talk about him being your personal guard at another time." She thought Darryl's talent would be wasted as Angeline's personal guard.
Angeline's face fell with disappointment.
Meanwhile, Darryl was already back in his room. His mood was at its worst for having wasted so much time with Angeline and receiving a scolding from the Queen. It took him a long time to finally fall asleep.
The next day, he woke up very early in the morning. A maid knocked on his door and said, "Darren, the Queen has summoned you to the main hall. You better get there quickly." Then, she left.
