At the long conference table used by the highest-ranking vampires for meetings, the Patriarch's seat remained empty.
The rest of the thirteen vampire princes had arrived and were seated on both sides of the conference table according to their statuses.
To Lux and the other vampire princes' surprise, an extra chair was added to the table that day, and the person who occupied the seat was none other than Max.
Lux, Vivien, and the other princes knew Max had failed to bring back the blood of Hepburn, the Holy Maiden—the mission assigned to him by the Patriarch—causing the Patriarch to go into slumber once more from being unable to fulfill his wish.
Lux was under the assumption that the Patriarch would be utterly disappointed with Max, and thus the latter's yearning to become the fourteenth vampire prince would not be realized.
Hence, all of them were dumbfounded to see Max sitting leisurely at the conference table with them.
Infuriated, Lux was the first to voice out. “What's going on?”
Just then, the Patriarch's maid, Lyanna, ambled into the room and said, “This is the Patriarch's will.”
The entire time, Max slouched in the chair in silence with an amused expression on his face.
Instantly, Lux grew anxious.
“Ms. Lyanna, this guy didn't complete the mission given to him by the Patriarch. Why can he be present here today, not to mention deserving a seat at the table?”
Vivien and the other vampire princes, sharing the same doubts, gazed at Lyanna, the host of the meeting that day.
Lyanna replied calmly, “I'm just as clueless as you are. I only know this is the Patriarch's decision. When Max came back, the Patriarch summoned him. I don't know what the Patriarch discussed with Max, but he was delighted after the meeting. He mentioned he has high hopes for Max and said that the credit belongs to Max if the vampires can successfully replace humans as the earth's new ruler. The Patriarch made the exception of allowing Max to be the fourteenth vampire prince. From now on, Max and the bondslaves he creates will form a new clan, and they will be on equal footing with the other thirteen vampire clans.”
