“I know.” Julien reached out to hook her waist and gently pulled her into his arms. “But I feel distressed and even regret.”
“Why do you feel regret?” Sydney looked up at him with confusion.
Julien put his forehead against hers. “I regret that I didn’t protect you back then. If I had come to protect you when I read your letter and got to know that Madeline and Kaylie were bullying you, you would never have had such a terrible experience.”
‘Moreover, Lyra would not have got the opportunity to cheat me, and I would have married Leaf earlier. We may even have children now...’
Seeing his guilty expression, Sydney couldn’t help holding his face with both hands and squeezing it slightly. “Well, don't feel guilty. It’s not your fault. You were often hospitalized because of your heart back then. How could you come to me often? Don’t blame yourself. Moreover, I was just bullied by them for a while. After my father discovered what they had done to me, they didn’t dare to bully me anymore. So, my childhood was quite happy.”
Julien took away her hands that were squeezing his face. “But I still feel I missed many opportunities to care for you.”
Sydney smiled. “Since you think you missed many opportunities, you can treat me much better from now on.”
“Certainly.” Julien’s eyes lit up for a moment, and then he embraced her tighter, as if he would never let go of her.
Although Sydney felt a little uncomfortable, she understood his current mood, so she didn’t stop him from hugging her tighter.
Anyway, she could endure it.
“By the way, do you want to know Kaylie’s whereabouts?” Thinking of something, Julien loosened his hold on Sydney and looked down at her.
Sydney raised her eyebrows.
“Kaylie?”
“Yeah.”
Sydney curled her lips. “When Madeline returned to Port City, I wondered why Kaylie wasn’t with her. When I went to Kingthene last time, I only saw Madeline and didn’t see Kaylie. I guess Kaylie may have died.”
“No. She doesn’t die.” Julien shook his head.
Sydney became surprised. “She doesn’t die?”
“Yeah.” Julien nodded.
Sydney sneered, “Well, bad weeds never die. She had cancer six years ago. I guessed that her cancer must have become very serious and that she may have died. But I didn’t expect she would still be alive.”
“She’s put in prison,” Julien said.
“What?” Sydney became stunned. Then she straightened up immediately. “She’s put in prison. Why?”
‘Is it because she poisoned my father? Well… No. It shouldn’t be the reason. She poisoned my father in Port City, and the police in another country were not responsible for this case. Moreover, Madeline helped her poison my father. If Kaylie was put in prison due to this, Madeline couldn’t have been free.’
“Because of manslaughter,” he explained after stroking Sydney’s hair. “After Kaylie and Madeline left Port City, they went to Beautrea and got the nationality. They lived a two-year self-indulgent life with the money taken from Skylight Corporation. As they only spent and didn’t earn money, they ran out of the money quickly. Besides, they were not the kind of people who worked hard to make money. So...”
“Do you mean that they became prostitutes?” Sydney asked.
Julien nodded. “Almost. They went to a nightclub and wanted to hook up with some rich men. In this way, they didn’t have to worry about their future life. Madeline was young, and many men liked her. She soon messed about with a rich man. Though Kaylie was not young, she still had some charm. Some men liked women of her kind. Then an old man picked her up and kept her secretly. The old man even prepared to divorce his wife for Kaylie.”
“Stop,” Sydney signaled for him to stop. Then she swallowed and made a bold guess. “Then the old man’s wife discovered Kaylie. When she went to Kaylie, she was killed, right?”
