Right when the four or five men were about to start raping her, countless snakes slithered toward them. Some of the snakes were red, some green, all glowing dimly in the night. On the cool mountaintop, the bodies of the snakes were even colder. The big and burly men were terrified, fleeing in all directions.
Jane opened her eyes weakly. She was not afraid, she was going to die anyway. Perhaps death by a snake's bite would be a more merciful outcome.
Barely a few minutes after the men ran away, a man limped over to her. His movements were sharp and precise, catching the snake in its weak spot and throwing them all back into his bag. i
Jane kept her eyes open forcefully and looked at the man in front of her. He looked to be in his late forties.
"You...you are...?" Jane asked breathlessly.
The man’s voice sounded simple and honest, and slightly wizened too. "I stay here on this mountain together with my mother. She's weak and can hardly see. I can’t afford to buy her supplements, so I thought of coming here to find her some meat. These are non-poisonous snakes. Miss, who did you offend? Why would they do this to you?" The man asked.
Jane gasped. "Give...give me some...some food. I want food."
The man laughed. "Alright, wait, I’ll bring you some."
All the man could produce was a piece of biscuit and some water. Even so, Jane ate with relish. Once there was food in her tummy, Jane felt invigorated.
"Miss, you won't mind if I carry you down the mountain on my back, would you?" The man asked.
Jane smiled weakly. "I almost died, why would I mind?"
"Come on, let's get you down the mountain. My mother and I stay in a stone hut. You can stay with my mother for the night. Once the sun comes up, I'll send you home. Where is your home, miss?" the man asked.
Jane did not reply. Home? Did she even have a home? From the day she was born until now, it seemed like she did not know what home felt like. None of her family cared about her. The only man she cared about was Alex, and now she had gotten further and further away from him. When she was almost killed, she had dug him out of her heart completely.
She conducted a series of comparisons and suddenly found the root of the problem. That was because her position in society and Alex's position in society, was a s different as night and day. He hung high up in the sky, whilst she lay deep in the ground. Back then when he saved her, she should not have taken the initiative and told him she was willing to become his lover. Only now did she realize, maybe the moment she said those words to Alex, it was already a
dishonor to him.
After all, she was not qualified to be his lover.
'The fact that he did not express his disgust with you o n the surface is already his greatest gift to you! But sooner or later, he would no longer hide his disgust, he would express all of it directly. That's because his hate and dislike of you have reached its peak, he can't take it anymore. Like right now.'
Jane finally realized this. It was all her fault! She should not have attempted to reach above her station. That's why she could not blame anyone else for her hard and miserable life, it was her own fault for not seeing through fate and the state of the world.
Now, she was at ease.
