Sabrina immediately stood up in shock.
Tears of agitation flowed out of her eyes. "Jane, Jane, where are you? How have you been? I already know you broke up with Alex, but where did you go? Where are you staying? Can I come and see you now?"
The moment she received Jane's call, the scene that popped up in Sabrina’s mind was the bottle of water that Jane handed to her when she was at her most lost and awkward, and also Jane's exceptionally warm smile.
Jane laughed softly and said, "I'm doing quite well, Sabrina. I'm full..."
The words 'I'm full’ made her seem extremely happy and peaceful. But to Sabrina's ears, they sounded like bitter drops of pain. What had happened to her for the past two weeks, to reduce her expectations toward life by such a big margin, so that she would be happy as long as she was full. Having a full tummy was her biggest happiness?
Sabrina burst out in tears. "Jane..."
Before she could start speaking, her phone was suddenly snatched away by Alex. "Jane..."
On the other end, Jane jumped up in shock. Then she paused, at a loss for what to say. A moment later, she mumbled, "Mr...Mr. Poole, why-why are you with
Sabrina?"
Mr. Poole. She actually addressed him as Mr. Poole. Why did it sound like a knife to his ears? In the past, she used to call him Alex. When they were in the throes or passion, Al. Or even, hubby. And now she was addressing him as Mr. Poole. And so calmly at that. As if they never had any interaction whatsoever.
"Tell me! Where are you!” Alex asked impatiently.
On the other end, Jane sounded panicked. "Mr...Mr. Poole, I...Do I still owe you anything? When...when I left your house, you were there, I didn't take anything...I...I have a card, but your wife took it too, didn't she?"
