Kingston sighed. "Did you ask her so bluntly? That indeed is a little too much. She is your mother, after all."
Eevonne's tears were streaming down her face. "I know. I also regretted it as soon as I said those words at that time. I apologized to her as soon as I talked back to her.
However, my mother has always been very strict with my brother and me. Also, we have never talked back to her before when we were growing up. She certainly could not stand it when I suddenly talked back to her. She then cried, beat me up, and scolded me at the same time like she had gone crazy. She said I have no conscience. My uncle's family had been feeding me and providing for me since I was a child. In the end, after I grew up, I lost my
conscience. She said she wouldn't be as selfish as the York family. It doesn't matter if her children have better food, worse food, or live any kind of life. No matter what, we are still her own children. However, she can’t mistreat other people’s children. She said everyone in the village praised her. She scolded me and bawled out at the top of her lungs, so all of our neighbors heard her, and they all came to watch. Not only did she say that I'm an ungrateful person, she even said that I have to take care of her for the rest of her life. If I don’t, she would go back and forth in the village every day telling everyone how heartless and immoral I am and scold me in various ways.”
She sighed. "Over time, I became truly anxious by her scoldings, and I said to her, ’ You say I don't provide for you and do not take care of you, then who was it who has
been taking care of you for so many years in the past? Was it my cousins? Since they are so great, why don't you let them take care of you?' Those words infuriated my mother once again. My cousins happened to have arrived just in time when I said those words. When they heard me talking to my mother like that, my cousin immediately kicked me on my stomach on the spot. He kicked me so hard that I was unable to stand up for a long while."
Kingston was puzzled. "Your cousins are not from the same village as yours. How did they know that you and your mother were having a fight?"
Eevonne smiled miserably. "My uncle's house is only two kilometers away from my house, which means he was living in the neighboring village. When my mother and I were having a fight, someone from my uncle's village happened to pass by my house and saw it. That person then ran quickly to my uncle's house. My cousins happened to be at home as well. Within a few minutes, they rushed over from their house."
Kingston could not help but feel emotional when he heard that. Who in this day in age would not like a drama? When other people are having a fight, they would watch and fan the blames. The bigger the trouble the better it would be for them.
"Both of my cousins beat me up. They dragged me all the way to the entrance of my house while beating me up, and then they dragged and pulled me to the entrance of my village, which was the place where you saw me. They wanted to let the villagers and passers-by know that I am an irresponsible daughter. Not only am I an irresponsible daughter, but I actually have not made any money at all since I went out to work. I have just been playing and having fun. I haven't cleared my debt, and I came home to fight with my mother. They kept beating me up while shouting at me. Kingston, to be honest, if you hadn't come to my rescue, I was even doubting if I would be killed by them that day."
"It's fine. You're safe now. By the way, how much money do you currently still owe?" Kingston asked gently.
