And in comparison to her, Selene was the absolute opposite. Did Selene ever show even the slightest trace of integrity? Mindy, the cousin he had been spoiling for over twenty years, was no different. The more he looked at Mindy, the more disgusted he was b y her. However, the thought of Mindy had reminded him of Ruth, which was why he decided to call Sabrina to ask about her.
"I'm sorry, Sabrina," he said apologetically. "I guess I have been getting ahead of myself, I want to apologize to you about that. I won't force you into it anymore. W e are still good friends, though, aren't we?"
"Yes. I will always see you as a good friend of mine. Is this why you are calling?" Sabrina's tone eased.
"Not really. You received a call from your friend Ruth just now right before you left. It has been a few days since she last showed up for work. Did something happen to her?"
Sabrina became increasingly anxious at the mention o f Ruth, but she knew that she couldn't mention this to anyone just yet. She decided to brush it off. "She's fine. She just has not been feeling well for the past few days, it's a woman's thing. I made her some ginger tea so she can warm up a little bit."
"Okay then, tell her to rest well. There is no hurry back to work," Marcus said, concerned.
Sabrina nodded. "I'll hang up now, then."
"Yeah."
After she ended the call, Sabrina focused on the road. The slum was in the opposite direction of where she had worked, but she was not a good enough driver to speed up despite the occasion. It took almost an hour for her to carefully drive herself to the slum. Ruth had not called her again during that time. When Sabrina took out her phone to call Ruth again, she realized Ruth's phone had been turned off. Turned off! Her heart sank and drove slightly faster. Luckily, she was familiar with the area. It might have been six years and though South City had changed drastically, the slum remained the same. Undeveloped and chaotic. 1
She navigated in between the messy allies aimlessly, desperate to find Ruth and rescue her as soon as possible, but she had no idea as to where she was after going through a few different allies.
"Where on earth are you, Ruth? I should be able to hear you if you are shouting," she mumbled to herself as she poked her head out the window. As soon as she did so, she noticed an undergarment tossed carelessly on top of a trash bin. She recognised it immediately, she was the one who had bought that exact undergarment for Ruth when she had been chased out of her house with no change of clothes. Sabrina hit her brakes immediately and rushed towards the door, which led underground.
She shoved the door open and ran directly to the basement. Instantly, she was surrounded by four men who towered over her.
"What do you think you are doing here?"
Sabrina showed them a photo of her and Sebastian and said, "I'm Sebastian Ford's wife, I'm here to pay ransom for someone. Where is Ruth?"
None of the men responded.
"Ruth! Where are you??" she shouted at the top of her lungs.
"Sabrina...Sabrina! I'm here!" Ruth's wails came from a dark room nearby. Sabrina ran towards the sound and stopped in her tracks when she saw what was in the room.
