"Sabrina, I...do you know what it feels like to be deceived, betrayed and tossed aside by your own kin?" Ruth asked in tears. Then she shook her head and continued, "You don't. Your father is no longer around, but he loved you with all his heart when he was still alive. Your mother is missing, but she loved you too. You wouldn't know how it feels to be deceived and sold out by your own parents. I don't think I can live like this any longer, Sabrina."
Sabrina patted Ruth on her hand. "You are your own person, Ruth. Stay strong. I...I can understand what you are saying, I know the feeling."
"You do?"
"Yeah. To be cut off, insulted and hurt by your father, I can empathize with what you feel," she responded gloomily. She lifted her glance to meet Ruth's eyes. " Tell me, what did they do to you?"
Ruth flinched as she recalled what her parents had done to her.
"They..." Her sight was blurred from all the tears, her voice was trembling in despair and helplessness. "I... did you know, Sabrina? I was lucky that I kept an eye out for myself. I have been using the phone you gave m e before, but that isn't really the primary number. I have another phone, a tiny old model that I bought from a second-hand electronic store. I used my
primary number on that and kept it on silent mode all the time, which they didn't know about. Had I not done that, I would have been done for today, you know? Sabrina, they...how could my parents be so cruel?"
Ruth looked at Sabrina and broke down crying like a small child. Last Monday, on the day when Sabrina bought chocolate for everyone at the office, Ruth came close to being hit with sulfuric acid by her cousin Mindy, but luckily Ryan managed to block the attack with his arm. Because of that, a small area of his arm was burnt and Ryan was sent directly to the hospital. Ruth was extremely grateful for what Ryan did. She was rather fond of him before that to begin with, but she didn't think she was worthy enough for him.
When she saw with her own eyes how Sabrina had been attacked at the old Ford residence, Ruth realized that a girl with no wealthy or powerful background would face countless obstacles if she was to marry into a wealthy family, which was why even though she did liked Ryan, she had been mindful to keep her feelings at bay.
However, things did not progress the way Ruth had originally imagined. Ryan saved her with no regards t o his own safety and Ruth was so moved that she desperately wanted to give him her heart.
Ryan stayed in the VIP exclusive ward. Not only was h e alone in his room, the entire floor was empty apart from a few individuals that were required there, creating an environment comparable to that of a five-star hotel. The place was quiet and elegantly decorated. Ruth sat by Ryan's bed with tears streaming down her face.
