Jane truly was happy, extremely happy. The night that Alex took her back to his house, she cried into her blankets until it was soaked in tears. No one had ever treated her like a human-being since she was born. She didn't understand why her parents would bring her to this world. Why give birth to her if they weren't going to love her? She tried protesting against the injustice and argued with her parents, asking them why they didn't love her. But they always had more excuses and reasons.
Her father would say, "Jane, we gave you life and fed you. Not only are you not appreciative of us, but you want to fight for attention? Your mother and I are not petty people, so why would we have a child like you?"
"All my brothers and sisters have their own rooms? Why am I the only one sleeping out here like a dog?" she asked in tears.
"Your brothers and sisters are twins, what about you?" 1
Her mother added, "Your siblings are much sweeter when they call us and would never complain like you d o! Besides, you know that it's difficult for Mommy and Daddy to raise so many children, Jane. There are bound to be times where there isn't enough love to go around. There's nothing we can do. The others are twins and you are the only one out of place, so we have to look after them first."
"We think that it's already not bad that we managed to take such good care of eight out of nine children we gave birth to. The fact that only one of them is not getting as much attention is understandable and we are proud of it. You need to understand that even fingers are at different lengths, would you chop all the fingers in half only to match the length of your pinky finger? If we really were the kind of parents who don't love or care for you, we would have sent you away considering how many children we have. If we sent you away to some foreign country, what would you d o? A lot of couples overseas get divorced and abandon the children they adopted," her father carried on hurriedly. 1
"Also," her mother agreed, "a lot of those foster parents are sick in the head. If we send you off to some psycho parents, you can't even imagine the physical and psychological damage you might suffer. Mommy and Daddy don't have the heart to send you away and keep you with us, yet you turn around and blame us? Jane, you can't be this ungrateful." 1
That was the flow of the countless similar conversations she had with her parents. That was how she survived since she was a child, until her spirit eventually died down in the end. All she could d o was pretend that she didn't have parents or siblings. Jane Sheen had no family. But now, she had Alex.
Alex became her family, her everything, her sky and her life. She swore to love him with everything she had in life. She was going to take care of him and be the obedient maid that would come and go at his command. She was going to be the best and least needy partner in bed. She was happy.
From that day onward, Jane did exactly as she promised. She massaged Alex's shoulders, legs and head at home; she cooked dishes that Alex enjoyed; and at night, she became the shameless, skillful and playful woman in bed. Whenever Alex was with her, h e never had to take the initiative. On top of that, she proactively went to the hospital to have a ligature. But in the end, Alex did not approve and carried her away when she was already laying on the operation table.
"Why?" she murmured, burying her head in his embrace.
Alex remained expressionless and his tone was steady. "I can't take away your right to become a mother. There are many ways to not get pregnant. You can just go with a subdermal contraceptive implant without removing the entire thing, so that in the future, if you do find someone you want to marry, a man that you can spend the rest of your life with, you can still have children."
