Old Master Shaw was confused. "Grace, why...why are you suddenly mentioning the Payne family?"
Grace smiled mournfully. "After all, the Payne family are locals of Star Island, and I'm from Star Island too. My family has been living here for more than a century, and now I'm the only one left. I... I can't even ensure my own survival, that's why I would like to...I would like to leave one of my children with the Payne family. But they definitely won't want my child, so could you please put in a good word for me? To take this little son of mine who weighs less than three pounds?"
Old Master Shaw did not know what to say.
"As long as...as long as I can keep him alive, at least I’ll be preserving a part of the bloodline of the Summer family. I don't even know whether the three of us will b e executed once we arrive in South City, but even if we weren't executed, this child weighs less than three pounds. How can we endure such suffering along with us? If Rose Quinton kills us the moment we arrive in South City, then does the bloodline of the Summer family deserve to be severed? Do I deserve such a cruel fate? Uncle Shaw, I’m begging you, please, have pity on this poor child and give him a chance at life, please?" When she uttered her last few sentences, Grace was crying so hard, the words could hardly be deciphered.
Tears flowed down the old man's face too.
After a slight pause, he said, "My dear girl, you have suffered so much, you're right! This would be better, even if later on after your child grows up and fights with Rose for the family inheritance, at least there's only one child, and the other one will be living with the Payne family."
Grace nodded vehemently. "I promise, I won’t fight Rose for the family inheritance."
"Alright!" The old man said. "Leave this to me! But my dear girl, you have to promise that this has to remain a secret between us. Since you decided to give this child to the Payne family, then you can never acknowledge him as your son. I'm only doing this to save the Ford family from further trouble. You’re my friend's daughter, and your father once gave me financial aid. But even so, I repaid him by saving your parents and your siblings later on. Now I want to help you, but I also have to strike a balance between you and Sean and Rose, so please, try to understand."
Instead, Grace laughed. "Uncle Shaw, you're the kindest man I've ever met in this world. Thank you for helping me, I’m afraid if it was anyone else, no one else would help me, but you had a falling out with Rose because of me, you...I don’t know how to thank you. I might not be able to repay your kindness for the rest of my life, but Uncle Shaw, don’t you worry. I will lock my lips, and never mention the fact that I have another son, not till the day I lay on my deathbed. My only wish is for my younger son to be able to live. As long as he's alive, I'm determined. I'll never see him again for the rest of my life, never acknowledge him a s my son!"
With that, Grace clutched her younger son tightly to her chest and sobbed, her wails sounding both mournful and depressing.
Old Master Shaw left the ward quietly, then turned and headed to the ward Ben Payne’s wife was resting i n.
After explaining his intentions, Ben rejected him immediately. "I can't care for my enemy’s son!"
Old Master Shaw said, "You think of Grace as your enemy? You’re indeed an unconscionable man."
Ben immediately said, "She's not my enemy. On the contrary, when she was a child, I even bought her sweets. The enemy I'm referring to is the Ford family. They almost pushed me over the edge with their ruthless tricks, how could I take in their son?”
"You'll benefit from taking in this child. Your wife just lost her baby, she's devastated, it'll help if there's a child for her to take care of. Also, I promise, neither the Ford family nor Grace will ever come back for this child, he will become your son. And lastly, if you take i n this boy, I will help you," Old Master Shaw replied.
His last sentence was especially effective. Ben immediately raised his head and looked at the old man. "How, how do you plan to help me?"
Old Master Shaw replied, "I will build a bridge between you and the Ford family, to help reconcile the two of you. Even though the Fords have retracted fully from Star Island, I will make them leave behind some basic infrastructure. This will be highly beneficial to the island. Next, if in the future an enemy attacks the island, I will get rid of all the vying powers on the island. This way, you, Ben Payne, and the future generations of the Payne family can live and prosper o n Star Island for at least the next 30,40 years!" Old Master Shaw was a man of his words.
