As dusk fell, Naomi brought Mia a glass of juice, “Drink up and get some sleep.”
Mia opened her mouth and wanted to tell Naomi about Leo’s whereabouts. But soon she stopped herself. She was considering Naomi’s temperament. Although Naomi was always quick to nag at Leo, she would panic if she knew he might be in danger.
If she called him too much, it would distract him. If Leo didn’t answer her calls, she would feel very nervous at home. Therefore, Mia decided not to tell Naomi. She took the juice, “Thank you, Naomi.”
“Ah, you silly girl, no need for thanks. We’re family. Your gratitude makes it sound like we’re strangers.”
Mia huddled into Naomi’s arm, smiling sweetly, “I was just showing my appreciation. Naomi, don’t take it too seriously.”
After working in his study for over two hours, Andre returned to their room, deliberately softening his footsteps, not wanting to disturb his wife’s sleep. The lump on the bed suddenly spoke, “Honey, turn on the light. I can’t sleep.”
Upon hearing this, Andre turned on the bedside lamp and walked over to his wife who was rubbing her belly, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”
Mia sat up, “How can I sleep when you’re not here?”
Andre sat next to her, gently stroking her hair, “You’re hard to please, aren’t you?”
Mia snuggled up to him. Her face was pressed against his shoulder. “I’m always hard to please, but not when it comes to you.”
“You lie down. I’ll go take a shower.”
“Hold on, darling. First accept my surprise gift. If we wait any longer, our baby will be asleep and we’ll have to wake him up tomorrow.”
A hint of amusement flickered across Andre’s eyes, “What does the surprise have to do with our baby?”
Mia guided Andre’s hand to her belly, "Feel this. He’s particularly active at night. If you press against my belly, he’ll kick his little feet to communicate with you.”
Andre had heard about fetal movements, but he’d never experienced it before. He helped Mia lie down, and lifted her dress. Her round belly was exposed. He placed his hand on her belly, but the baby, who had been kicking just a moment ago, suddenly stopped.
Andre looked at his wife. Mia also looked at him. Wasn’t the baby just kicking? Mia placed her hand on her belly, “Baby, kick.”
Feeling Mia’s warmth, the baby inside her became excited again, causing a faint ripple on her belly.
Andre saw it, but the moment his hand touched her belly, the baby stopped kicking again.
Mia shouted at her belly, “Keep kicking. Your dad is back.”
No response.
Mia asked, “Baby?”
There was still no response.
Mia looked at her husband, “Darling, I think he wants to hear you call him baby.”
The aloof Andre said, “It’s very hard for me to say it out.”
“I thought so too, but he insists. Even if I call him baby, it doesn’t work.” Mia continued, “I not only call him baby, but I also have to tell him that I love him all the time, in order to get him to kick a couple times. You need to add ‘I love you’ after calling him baby. Otherwise, he won’t do it.”
Every time Andre heard his wife mention their son, he was filled with an inexplicable sensation. “You say it out for me.”
“He can recognize voices, so it won’t work.”
Andre withdrew his hand, “Then I don’t want him to kick.”
