Anya and Hansen's excitement fizzled out. They had pictured the cherry orchard to be in some remote countryside, not just a short drive away.
Ever since their son had come down with a cold, Mia had become extra cautious whenever they went out. Back in the bedroom, she packed her son's essentials: clothes, hat, light blanket, quilt, and his special lotion. It was a whole bag full of stuff, all for her precious boy.
Molly, comfortably seated next to Chad in the passenger seat, watched her bustling family with a sense of contentment, feeling quite the odd one out. "Chad, should I be doing something?" Molly leaned towards the window to ask her husband.
Chad glanced at the excited Anya and his father-in-law, then told his wife, "Just stay in the car. If you need anything, just ask Anya to fetch it."
So, Molly called out, "Anya, darling, could you grab me some sunscreen?"
Anya turned and loudly asked, "Auntie, do you want the lotion or the spray?"
Molly looked at Chad and smiled. "Either is fine."
And so, Anya brought both.
When they set off, Hansen ended up in the car at the back with his eldest grandchild and little Anya. On the way, Leo, noticing the dress Anya wore, couldn't help but ask, "Anya, you look lovely in that dress. But we're going to pick cherries. Are you planning to use your dress as a cherry basket?"
Anya pulled out a large plastic bag from her pocket. "Nope, I've got a bag for the cherries."
Leo had to admit, he completely missed the mark with his question, and Anya didn't even catch his main concern. Hansen grew more fond of his granddaughter-in-law by the minute. "Anya, girl, you think of everything. Even grandpa here didn't think that far ahead."
Anya chuckled. "I've wanted to go for a while, but Chad's always off to his... hobbies, and I didn't want to disturb him." She almost slipped saying "library" but quickly covered it with "hobbies."
Leo glanced back, a smile creeping up as he saw Anya keeping his secret. Hansen ribbed his grandson, "All you do is play, never serious about anything."
Anya defended Leo, her annoyance from yesterday evaporating like mist, "Grandpa, Chad works hard all week. Let him have his fun on the weekends."
Hansen sighed, "Our Cedillo family is truly blessed." His eldest son married a capable woman, his second son found a gem like Mia, his daughter snagged a young talent, and even the unlucky grandson found someone as blindly devoted as Anya.
Anya was confused, but Leo understood and didn't say a word. He just followed the car ahead closely. Mia chose to sit in the back with her son in his car seat, the little guy enjoying every trip in his dad's car. His bright eyes took in the world outside the window, babbling to himself and playing.
The car was quiet, and Mia recorded the warm moments of her little family, including Andre's back in the shot. "Say 'mommy'," Mia teased her son's soft lower lip. The little one opened his mouth, ready to 'eat' his mom's hand.
"Let mommy see if my little tiger's teeth have come in. It's gonna hurt if you bite now," Mia said, pinching her son's chubby cheeks. Andre occasionally chimed in between the mother and son, "Should we also trim his nails?"
"Let's do it when he's asleep. He's busy playing now."
Mia couldn't hide her affection for her son, hugging the little bundle of joy. "Strange, I thought I gave birth to a little tiger. How come he's turning into a little piggy? We're talking about Henry, right, buddy?" Mia tapped her son's nose, and he giggled, hands and feet flailing.
Andre caught a glimpse of the mother and son in the rearview mirror, feeling a profound sense of peace. "Henry?"
Mia lifted her son so he could see towards the driver's seat. Andre asked, "Can you say 'daddy' anymore?"
"Ah ah ahh!"
Andre laughed and switched driving hands, the little one thrilled to see a better view from the front seat.
