"Well, I have come around now. Bobby is a good boy. You will learn a lot from him. I was confused and couldn't tell right from wrong a while ago. But now I know, so I won't stop you from befriending him," the woman said with a smile.
"Oh, that's my good mommy!" Ruby grinned.
"Ruby, classes are about to begin. Why haven't you gone to class yet?” Bobby called from a distance.
"Coming, Bobby," Ruby replied. After saying goodbye to her mother, Ruby ran to her class with her schoolbag on her back.
The woman stood there, smiled, and watched Ruby happily hop to her class.
After driving Bobby and Nadia to school and on her way to work, Nancy took out her cellphone and found that there was no call or message from Charles.
'The man doesn't care about his children or our home anymore. What the hell is he doing?'
Putting her phone away, Nancy drove to the hospital.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Nancy changed her clothes and went straight to Finn's ward.
The little boy's face was still very pale, and Colten's and his wife's eyes were red. Obviously, they did not get that much sleep last night.
"How is he?" Nancy asked with concern.
"He woke up twice during the night. After the anesthetic wore off, he seemed to be in so much pain." Colten was tough, but his voice cracked as he replied to Nancy.
"Well, it's normal for him to feel pain. He's lucky to be able to keep his legs. We should be grateful," Nancy remarked.
"And we should thank you as well, Nancy," Colten said gratefully.
"That's not necessary. By the way, I heard that you were investigating Romantic Private Club yesterday when Finn was ran over. The Romantic Private Club case is big. I was also one of its victims. Do you have any leads now?" Nancy asked tentatively.
"Unfortunately, we don't have any new leads. This case is definitely not as simple as it looks. I'm convinced that shady transactions take place there, but without any concrete evidence, the investigation will remain stagnant," Colten sighed helplessly.
"Nana is a key figure and could be the way to cracking the case open, but she's mentally indisposed now. I have contacted a psychiatrist to treat her. I believe she will be able to recover soon and hopefully before the media gets wind of the case. It can get out of hand really fast once it's out there," Nancy said after thinking for a while.
"Well, let's pray that Nana recovers soon."
"By the way, have you found the driver who ran over Finn?" Yesterday, when Finn was rushed to the hospital, Nancy was the one who attended to him. Anyone who committed such a heinous crime against a child should be held accountable and punished.
Colten shook his head. "The driver who ran over Finn got away."
"You didn't check the surveillance footage?" As far as Nancy knew, the school gate was the place with the most number of surveillance cameras. If there was an accident at the gate, it should be easy to find the perpetrator.
How could the driver just run away like that?
"I did. I found it incredibly appalling that the driver didn't even step out of the car to try and help Finn. The hit looked deliberate. Someone said that the driver even attempted to reverse the car on Finn to make sure he didn't get up again. Fortunately, many people came to Finn's rescue at that time, and the driver had no choice but to escape." Colten looked at Finn with a pitiful look on his face and said guiltily, "This is all my fault. As a policeman, I'm successful, but as a father, I'm a failure."
"Don't blame yourself. You said that the hit looked deliberate. Do you think the driver did it on purpose?" Nancy asked after being silent for a while.
"I'm sure that the driver did it on purpose. I suspect that he's sending me a message because of my involvement in the investigation of the club. After all, too many people are involved in the case, and all of them are rich and powerful. I'm under a lot of pressure right now," Colten answered. "But I refuse to let the bad guys win. Just because I'm under a lot of pressure doesn't mean I should stop seeking the truth."
"You're right. If we don't go after the bad guys, they will just grow more and more arrogant and continue treating life like some sort of a sick little game," Nancy agreed.
