Ronald chuckled softly, holding her hand. "I had it out with the Malones."
"I know."
"Without the Malones' support, I might be left with nothing," Ronald's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Ronald." She looked up at him, her gaze earnest. "I know the Malones don't like me, and I know it's because of me that you've had this falling out. During the time you were gone, I thought about us going our separate ways, but I feel—"
"You're thinking of breaking up?" Ronald's face blanched. "Because the Malones disapprove?"
He was usually so composed, but anything involving Kari threw him completely off balance.
He gripped her hand a tad too tightly, causing Kari to wince. "Let go."
Realizing he was hurting her, Ronald immediately softened, blowing gently on her wrist. "Sorry."
Watching him in this vulnerable state, Kari's heart ached.
She sighed, "I wasn't finished speaking."
"I did think about us parting ways, but I can't do it." Kari's words were measured and deliberate. "Ronald, every day I find myself falling for you more and more. I know that if we were to separate, you might have a better future, but I don't want that."
She licked her lips, struggling a bit with her words.
"Brittany offered me shares in the studio. With dividends and other financial gains, I might rake in a few million a year... I know it's peanuts compared to what the Malones have, but that's all I've got."
Ronald stared at her intently, a wave of joy washing over him. "So, what are you trying to say?"
"If you're cut off by the Malones, my earnings could easily support a comfortable life for us here in Imperial City."
"So, can we—"
"Yes." Ronald was ecstatic, wishing he could merge her into his very being. "I've never considered leaving you."
Never.
"Kari, even if being with you means losing everything, I'll do everything I can to give you the best life possible."
Kari wrapped her arms around his neck, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Okay."
