"Madam, don't be upset. The young master has been tied up with business recently. He'll probably be better once he's finished." The maid tried to comfort Carla, noticing her upset expression.
Feeling a surge of emotion, Carla retreated to her bedroom, her eyes welling with tears as she took in the sight of the carefully arranged marital suite.
...
The news of William's absence on their first night was impossible to keep under wraps.
The Salter family was livid, confronting William.
But William was no longer the puppet he once was. Facing Anthony Salter, he said, "If you think I'm not treating your sister well, you are free to apply for an annulment."
"William, you..." Anthony, furious and exasperated, continued, "My sister has done nothing wrong. It's you who have done such a thing. It's a mercy we didn't send you to jail."
"Why don't you ask your sister about the real events?"
William brushed Anthony off, no longer the gentleman he once was, as he continued to say, "Anthony, we've known each other for over twenty years. Do you think I would do such a thing just because I had a few drinks?"
Stunned, Anthony left after a long silence.
Anthony confronted Carla who at last confessed that William had done nothing wrong and that she had initiated it.
"Carla, have you lost your mind? You've pushed him away completely!"
William was stoic, but he was a man. He was falsely accused of being a "rapist", ostracized, and forced into marriage. How could he be okay with all of that?
"Bro, I didn't mean to do that. I just love him too much to miss that golden opportunity," Carla choked, "I'll make it up to him."
Anthony scolded his younger sister, "How could you be so naive?"
The siblings kept the truth hidden. Carla tolerated William's coldness and avoidance. Nearly half a month into their marriage, William had hardly been home. He hadn't even set foot in the Salter family home.
