Ivy stepped forward. "Ms. Dustin, is this your kid?"
"Yes, Your Highness."
Daniel squirmed uncomfortably in Brittany’s arms. He was about to turn six, and Daddy had told him he was too big to be carried by Mommy. And Mommy would get tired.
Brittany thought he was just being shy, so she set him down and took his hand instead. "Has Daniel been giving you any trouble?"
Ivy shook her head. "Not at all. I really like him."
And she meant it.
In a way, she actually had a soft spot for Brittany, especially after seeing how she'd helped out a waitress at the diner, which greatly enhanced her respect for her. However, with Brittany's return, it spelled trouble for Holden's plans.
Brittany, unaware of Ivy's thoughts, was eager to leave with Daniel. "Your Highness, I should get going."
Ivy nodded her acknowledgment.
After watching Brittany and Daniel leave, Ivy got back to work.
Once Brittany and Daniel were settled in the car, Brittany handed Daniel his water bottle. "That lovely lady you were with, how do you know her?"
"She thought I was good at the game, so she played with me." Daniel took a sip. "Mommy, am I cool or what?"
Daniel had always been frail, but he'd gotten stronger over the past year.
Brittany, touched, pinched his cheek gently. "Yes, you are!"
"That means I can definitely protect my little brother or sister!" Daniel puffed out his chest proudly. "Mommy, when will you give me a little brother or sister?"
The mood in the car shifted instantly.
Brittany thought of the child they had recently lost, and her expression turned sad.
