Brittany's arms ached, but the longing to see her son after so long spurred her on. Thankfully, the airport had an express lane, and in less than ten minutes, she was in the parking lot, strapping Daniel into his car seat.
"Are you hungry?" Brittany asked as she clicked the belt into place.
"Not really," Daniel shook his head. "Emily packed me some cupcakes. I'll just warm them up in the microwave later. You used to love those."
Daniel carried the cupcakes all the way, and Brittany felt a wave of emotion. "That sounds lovely."
Once at the hospital, Daniel urged Brittany into bed. He warmed the cupcakes and placed one in front of her. "Here, Mommy, take a bite."
Brittany took a small piece, surprised at how good it tasted.
"Delicious."
"I knew you'd like it. You always did," Daniel said, stuffing a piece into his own mouth. "It's just a shame about Dad..."
He didn’t finish his words.
Brittany caught the word "Dad" and frowned. "Daniel, you haven't told me, where has your father gone?"
It had been so long since she'd woken up, and her husband hadn't visited once.
"Daddy's gone far away," Daniel said softly.
Brittany's heart skipped a beat. "Gone?"
Was her memory loss tied to his absence?
"Don't worry, Mommy. Daddy will come back," Daniel reassured her.
Unable to recall anything, Brittany had no choice but to let the matter rest.
With Daniel's company, her recovery sped up, and soon it was the eve of Christmas.
After a comprehensive evaluation, the doctors confirmed Brittany was in good shape and Yuri finally agreed to discharge her.
Staying in the hospital for over a month had left Brittany restless. She roughly remembered her occupation – a jewelry designer with her own studio.
"Dad, I'd like to go back to my studio work once I'm discharged."
