Outside the emergency room, Esther's mother was too overcome with grief to stand, collapsing onto the floor in tears.
"My only child... My only daughter..."
"Why would you do this to yourself? If you're gone, what am I supposed to do?"
Esther's father was the first to spot Miles. He stormed over, anger clear in his gaze. "Esther loved you so much. How could you break up with her?"
"Uncle, I thought about it, and we just weren't right for each other," Miles tried to explain.
Esther's father, aware of his daughter's long-standing affection for Miles, retorted sharply, "Not right for each other? Then why did you lead her on? You gave her hope only to crush it. How do you think my daughter can take that?!"
"…I'm sorry."
That was all Miles could muster.
"Is your sorry going to make my daughter come out of there safe and sound?!"
Of course, it wouldn't.
Miles hadn't anticipated Esther's drastic reaction.
But...
Breaking up had been necessary.
He had no regrets about that.
The only regret was agreeing to the relationship in the first place, not because he was nearing thirty and felt he needed a girlfriend, but because he hadn't thought it through properly when Esther approached him.
"Uncle, what's done is done. I didn't expect things to turn out this way, but ending a relationship that isn't working is normal. I never promised Esther marriage. Even when I agreed to try, I was clear it was just that—a trial. Esther agreed."
Despite the unfortunate situation, Miles didn't feel he was in the wrong.
"You—"
"Let me handle the medical bills. That's all I can offer. I'm sorry."
With that, Miles turned to leave.
Suddenly, Esther's dad grabbed him. "You can't just walk away! What if Esther wakes up and wants to see you?"
