"What are you up to?" Dorothy shot back, sounding as jumpy as a scared rabbit.
To her, the social gap between her and Everett was just too wide. The sense of oppression was obvious, and she felt extremely insecure.
Because even if she did her utmost, it wouldn't hurt him a bit. But if he wanted to harm her, it would be a piece of cake.
Not to mention that trying to compete with Heather now seemed like an uphill battle.
Her stressed response made Everett feel a pain in his heart.
"I would never hurt you, let alone your family."
"My mom's health isn't good. She can't take any emotional ups and downs. You'd better not see her." Dorothy wouldn't dare let Everett meet Bella now.
"Dorothy, could you…"
Everett trailed off, and he fell silent.
Dorothy waited for a moment before she said, "Go on."
"Could you not think of divorce at the first sign of trouble?" Everett's voice was low. He was full of complex emotions that he couldn't quite express.
He seemed lost, helpless, pleading, and a bit resentful.
"Our marriage is a joke to begin with. An assistant to a division director and the CEO of the Lopez Corporation? It sounds like a punchline! And as you've seen, it's already caused a lot of trouble for both of us. I just think we're back on track."
Back on track?
Ha! Could he really go back?
"What if I don't agree to a divorce?"
"Mr. Lopez, your mom is very against us being involved. She even stooped so low as to threaten my mom at the hospital. I don't know what she'll do next, but she's made it clear that she dislikes me. We don't need to go against her wishes."
