Kenneth felt a certain suffocation in his chest, as if he was forever under some kind of suppression.
Even though, by all accounts, he was doing pretty well for himself.
...
When Dorothy arrived at the hospital room, her mom's mood seemed to have been in a better place.
Usually, she had a long face, but that day, there was even a hint of a smile!
"What's the deal? Something good happen?"
Bella was happy. Dorothy’s mood also lifted a lot, then she put the roasted chestnuts she bought on her way on her mother's bedside table.
"Can't I just be in a good mood?"
"Sure, you can." Dorothy helped her peel the chestnuts, one by one, and put them in a small box.
Looking at her daughter, Bella couldn't help but ask, "That Everett's mother, she didn't give you a hard time, did she?"
Dorothy paused, shaking her head, "No."
"See? That's their attitude! Just because they think their son won't be at a loss, they think it's okay to play along!"
"Mom!" She couldn't help but frown, "Can't you stop being so narrow-minded?"
Bella chuckled while eating the chestnuts, "You'll regret it one day if you don't listen to me! That's what my mom told me, and I didn't listen. So now, I'm going to let you hit your own wall!"
Of course, as a mother, she made other arrangements for her daughter! And that was Kenneth.
Bella thought it would have been good to keep in touch with Kenneth, so he wouldn’t feel completely hopeless. That way, if her daughter got hurt by Everett, at least she would have had Kenneth by her side, unlike Bella herself, living a life filled with gloom.
But she kept those thoughts to herself, because she knew her daughter too well.
