Ever since the incident with Liam, Leopold had been weighed down by guilt and sorrow, but Aurelia seemed eerily calm even without a trace of sadness in her demeanor. Wasn’t that strange?
Could it be that after William came into her life, she had let go of the pain associated with Liam?
William stormed back upstairs and crossed arms over his chest, with his cheeks puffed out in a huff. His mouth pursed in indignation.
He didn't want to be here anymore. He longed for home and wished Arnold could wrap up his dinner meeting early and come to fetch him.
Kane was helping Mira with her homework when he noticed William's disgruntled expression. "What's the matter, William?" he asked.
"Your dad got mad at me and scolded me," William's pout grew even deeper.
Kane was helpless, and he asked, "Did you say something to upset him again?"
William shrugged, "I just said he couldn't protect his Liam, and he got all angry. It's the truth, isn't it? And he can't handle being reminded of it."
Kane said gently, “Losing Liam is the thing that hurts my dad the most. You poked at an open wound, of course, he got mad.”
William flopped down onto a chair and grabbed an apple, taking a big bite. Liam wasn’t even gone for good. He was still around, lively as ever.
"Adults shouldn’t get mad at kids anyway. My dad would never yell at me. When I was little and broke his favorite camera, he didn’t even raise his voice. Uncle Leopold has such a temper."
Kane just shrugged, "Dad has never been mad at me."
William made a face, "That’s because you’re his only son, the heir. I’m just the nephew he doesn’t like, which is why he yells at me."
Mira turned around, "My mom yells at me a lot too. She never yells at my sister, just me. Mom doesn't like me and always calls me dumb, mad that I’m not a boy."
Nina stuck her tongue out at her, saying, "You are pretty dumb."
Kane shook his head, replying, "Mira's not dumb at all. She’s just playing it cool."
