Agent A came with news about Raines, and he had been locked up in the basement of an old warehouse in Goldendell.
Leopold sprang into action, coordinating with the local cops to track him down.
Raines looked rough, probably from being cooped up for too long, and his mind seemed foggy.
But he was alone in that basement, and there was no sign of his mother, Elfreda.
Leopold's guys got Raines to the local hospital, and when they flew him back home, it was on New Year's Eve.
Lisbeth, tears streaming down her face, rushed over and wrapped him in a hug, "Raines, you're finally back. Seeing you're okay, that's all I needed."
But Raines just stood there, dazed, not moving an inch, his eyes looking at her as if she were a stranger, "Who are you?"
Lisbeth felt a jolt, "You don't remember me?"
Raines clutched his head, "I can't remember anything."
Aurelia glanced at Leopold, asking in confusion, "What's wrong with him?"
"He's not in great shape," Leopold said, "Let's let him rest in his room for now."
A servant helped Raines back to his room.
Lisbeth's heart was in knots. She had thought Raines would be angry with her, resent her, but he had actually forgotten her.
Aurelia patted her shoulder, trying to comfort her, "Don't panic. Let's give Raines some time to rest up before we jump to conclusions."
"I'll go check on him," Lisbeth said, heading upstairs.
Aurelia pulled Leopold aside, "Are you sure the man who came back is really Raines?"
"Yeah," Leopold nodded, "All signs point to yes."
"Did they drug him, causing the memory loss?" Aurelia asked.
"We can't be sure yet. He'll need further examination," Leopold replied.
Aurelia sighed, Raines had a history of memory issues, and she feared they had worsened. "And Elfreda? Why didn't you find her?"
