Arnold tucked William in gently, covering him with the quilt.
"Don't worry, I'll take good care of William tonight," he assured.
"It's late. You should get some rest too." Aurelia said, kissing William's rosy cheek before stepping out of the room.
As she opened the door and turned around, she caught a glimpse of a red shadow darting around the corner of the hallway. Startled, she instinctively stepped back into the room, her face paling slightly.
"What's wrong?" Arnold asked immediately.
"No... nothing," she stammered, swallowing hard and trying to maintain her composure. She must have seen wrong.
Arnold looked at Aurelia, then poked his head out of the door. His gaze swept over the quiet hallway. There was nobody there.
"Do you want me to walk you back to your room?"
"It’s okay. I'm just next door. Take care of William. He tends to kick off his blanket at night."
With a forced smile, Aurelia mustered her courage and walked out.
Arnold watched her until she entered her room, then he closed the door with relief.
Meanwhile, Leopold was lounging on the couch, casually flipping through a business magazine.
Kane had already tucked himself in for the night.
Seeing Aurelia enter, Leopold put down his magazine and wrapped an arm around her slim waist. "Fancy a bath together?"
Still shaken from what she saw, Aurelia gently pushed him away. "I'm a bit tired. I want to go to bed early."
Noticing her pallor, Leopold let her go. "Did you catch a cold? I'll run you a hot bath. It'll help you warm up."
She nodded. After Leopold had filled the tub, Aurelia sunk into the warm water, her mind constantly replaying the image of the eerie red shadow.
Was it a figment of her imagination or had she really seen a ghost? Did ghosts even exist?
Had Leopold seen it too? Knowing his personality, even if he had, he would never admit it.
After her bath, she went to check on Kane. He was sleeping soundly, looking extremely peaceful.
