Aurelia tugged at the corners of her stiff mouth, managing to force a smile.
Why should she shed tears for a fickle and heartless man? It was not worth it!
Seated at the dinner table, she tasted the chicken soup.
“Is it good?” Arnold, with adoring eyes, asked. He had visited her in the hospital every day, his heart full of concern and compassion.
She nodded. “Yeah, it's good.”
Arnold dished out a piece of chicken for her. “You've lost much weight. Take some time to recuperate at home.”
Aurelia took a bite of the chicken and then put down her fork, her expression turning solemn. “Leopold wants to divorce me and marry Megan. You all know about it, don't you?”
Such big news had already spread throughout the social circles. It was impossible for Aurelia's parents and Avery not to know.
As soon as she finished speaking, an eerie silence enveloped the dinner table, the four people exchanging glances.
“When we found out, we too were shocked. I can't understand how Leopold could change like this,” Jolin sighed.
“Maybe it's an old flame that never dies? After all, Megan was his first love,” Arnold suggested. Each word felt like a stab in Aurelia's heart, tearing it to shreds.
She gritted her teeth, a surge of resentment welling up in her chest.
“I've made up my mind. I am not divorcing Leopold! When I wanted a divorce, he was stubbornly against it. Now, he can't just have his way. According to the Stirling family rules, the head of the family can't divorce without good reasons. A prerequisite is that I must have committed a major wrongdoing. Even then, we must first hold a family meeting, get approval from two-thirds of the members, followed by a six-month cooling-off period.” She uttered these words with a finality that brooked no argument.
“Aurelia, have you… fallen in love with Leopold?” Arnold asked, a tremor in his voice.
Aurelia scoffed. “No way! How could I fall in love with such a heartless and fickle jerk? I am doing this for Kane. Megan will never treat Kane well, so I have to stay in the Stirling family to protect Kane. No one is allowed to lay a finger on my son.”
