When Aurelia returned to the hall, she grabbed a whiskey from the table and took a hefty gulp.
Her once calm heart was once again thrown into disarray by Leopold.
Her eyes instinctively searched the grand ballroom, looking for him, but he had already put his mask back on and was indistinguishable in the crowd.
His words reverberated in her mind. "My absence will only be temporary. I'll be back. You're not allowed to see anyone else."
What the hell was he implying?
Did he still plan on coming back?
She was so confused that she was still pondering it after she returned home from the party.
Just then, her cell phone rang. It was a call from Kane.
"Kane, why are you still up this late?" she asked.
"Mom, I miss you. Will you come and see me soon?"
His sweet, innocent voice brought a lump to her throat. "Of course, my love. Mom will come to see you."
"Mom, don't you think Dad's been acting strange lately?"
Kane explained how his father locked himself in his room after she left, not even coming out for dinner.
Aurelia didn't find it strange. Megan was his first love, and he couldn’t wait to rekindle their relationship, which was why he had so ruthlessly cast her aside.
"Kane, the adult world is complicated. You won't understand it just yet."
"Dad came home earlier. He was in his room, drinking alone. He drank so much that he hurt his stomach," Kane explained. He had seen everything from his hiding spot by the door.
Aurelia's heart clenched. Was he upset that she didn't weep for him and that she was managing to hold herself together?
"Tomorrow, have Grandma hide all his liquor. Don't leave him a single bottle."
"Alright," Kane agreed. "Mom, I think Dad must be going through something difficult. Could he be dealing with some kind of problem?"
Aurelia couldn't think of anything. He was the heir and the head of the Stirling family. He was powerful and wealthy. What kind of problem could he possibly have?
