Her big eyes were fixated on Chirpy, giggling non-stop. Every now and then, her chubby little hands would reach out, trying to touch Chirpy.
Each time she nearly made contact, Chirpy would flutter its wings and chirp, "No touchy!"
Margot, the older sister, would swoop in, slapping the little hand away, "Don't touch Chirpy, he doesn't like it."
Bella pouted, her eyes welling up with tears, on the brink of crying.
William comforted her like a mini adult, "Don't cry, I'll get Chirpy to sing a song for you."
Chirpy bobbed his head and began to sing, "I'm just a little birdie, I wanna fly so high, but I just can't reach the sky…"
Bella's tears turned into laughter. She clapped her hands along with Margot, applauding Chirpy's performance.
Chirpy, puffed up with pride, strutted around the table like he was king of the roost.
Aurelia watched from the doorway, a smile of indulgence on her face. How wonderful it would be to have a little girl of her own.
The only thing missing was a suitable father. Thinking of Leopold brought a pang of sadness. He had abandoned her, but still wanted to control her. Did he really think she was that easy to manipulate?
Ritchie was off gallivanting somewhere, not planning to come back for the family dinner. Emma's face darkened with worry.
Aurelia patted her shoulder, whispering, "I've applied for a public housing unit through the company for you. You and the kids can move out after the New Year. Without your financial support, Ritchie won't be able to enjoy his carefree lifestyle for long."
Emma nodded. Her in-laws' retirement money was all going towards paying off their mortgage, and Ritchie didn't contribute a dime to the household. All the family expenses fell on her.
Her mother-in-law was cunning; the house was in her and her husband's name. Emma felt like a fool, carrying the financial burden of the entire family on her own.
Aurelia had thought Emma was a tough cookie, but she was no match for Perla, who had practically chewed her up and spat her out.
