Avery had been away for quite some time, immersed in the world of film sets and distant locations. But today, he had made an exception to attend a school reunion, and after dropping Leah off at her place, he returned to his family home rather late.
As he stepped out of his car, the sight of a Rolls-Royce parked at the gate of the estate caught his eye. At this hour, who could be visiting? Certainly, it wasn't the paparazzi. They couldn't afford such luxury, and besides, this area was private property, strictly off-limits to uninvited guests.
The luxury car was sealed shut, its interior a mystery to Avery. And with the house lights all out, it didn't seem likely that any guest would still be lingering inside.
Aurelia was feeling like a thief caught in the act, her nerves on edge. Whenever she had her clandestine rendezvous with Leopold, she'd make sure to turn off the living room lights, terrified of being discovered.
Now, Aurelia was holding her breath, panicking like a cat caught with the cream. She hurriedly threw on her clothes, dreading the possibility of Avery catching her red-handed.
Leopold was the picture of composure. He dressed himself with an unhurried grace, restoring his impeccable appearance with the ease of a seasoned actor.
Avery knocked on the windows of the Rolls-Royce, but getting no response, he turned and made his way into the yard, perhaps to check if the owner was inside the house.
As Avery disappeared into the living room, Aurelia shot Leopold a glare before stealthily opening the car door and scampering out like a mouse. She sneaked into the yard, not heading for the living room but instead pretending to take a casual stroll around the back garden before slipping in through the rear entrance.
Just as she was about to ascend the staircase, Avery blocked her path.
"I thought you'd gone to bed," he said.
"I did, but I couldn't sleep, so I decided to take a walk in the garden," Aurelia replied, struggling to maintain a casual tone.
Avery gave her a probing look. "Aurelia, there's a Rolls-Royce parked outside. Do you know whose it is?"
"It's mine," Aurelia blurted out without thinking.
Avery raised an eyebrow, "Yours? When did you buy it?"
