Aurelia flashed a light smile. "Let's just enjoy our game and forget about her."
"Why would Leopold marry someone so... unattractive?" Skyler said, his face scrunched up in confusion.
"That's a question for Leopold," Aurelia snorted, her voice laced with disdain.
Leopold pressed his fingers to his temples, feeling like he'd swallowed a bitter pill but unable to voice his regret.
Megan stepped down from the carriage and sat beside him.
"Honey, no matter where you go, I'll be right there with you. For better or worse."
Self-loathing curdled in Leopold's gut.
"You keep acting out like this, and you must answer for it if anything bad happens. Don't blame anyone else."
Megan pouted. "Unless someone's out to get me, how could anything bad happen?"
Leopold eyed her with scorn. "Aren't you scared of AK Group's curse anymore?"
A shiver of fear passed through Megan. "I believe you'll protect me."
"If you're bent on self-destruction, no one can save you. I'm no Superman. I can't safeguard you in all ways. Your safety is in your hands. If I had almighty powers, you wouldn't even have the chance to sit beside me," Leopold said bluntly.
An open enemy is easy to guard against, but hidden threats are deadly. Had he not been so careless, Aurelia wouldn't have been caught off-guard.
Megan's face turned blue in anger. She threatened, "My life is precious. If I die, many others won't survive, either."
Leopold chuckled dismissively. "I couldn't care less. There are plenty of women in the world. I can easily find someone younger and more beautiful. It's not like I'll ever be short of women."
His words struck Megan like a thunderbolt, leaving her reeling.
If he stopped caring about Aurelia one day, Megan knew her worth would plummet.
The thought alone triggered an emotional earthquake within her. She had clawed her way up by poisoning Aurelia, and her fate was tied to her adversary's. Their fortunes would rise and fall together. She would never burst the restraints unless she could turn the tables and fully replace Aurelia.
"Honey, I want to make a good life with you and grow old together."
