"Why don't you two go play somewhere else and leave me be?"
"We're just worried you'll mess with Leopold and Mom’s breakfast-making," William said, pulling a face at her.
Skyler nodded furiously beside him. "Megan, keep your distance. Don't distract Aurelia from her cooking."
Megan was about to blow the top. Another day with these little brats would send her over the edge.
Finally, Aurelia and Leopold had breakfast ready. After eating, Megan excused herself to use the restroom. When she came out, she found the campsite deserted except for two bodyguards and Melissa, who was still sleeping.
"Where's Leopold?"
"They went for a walk," one of the bodyguards said.
"Which way did they go?"
"Over there." He pointed toward the north, where tall weeds flanked a narrow path, swaying with the mountain breeze, threatening to swallow anyone who dared enter.
Megan made to follow, but the bodyguard stopped her. "There could be rattlesnakes out there. It's dangerous. You can't go."
She glared at him. "Why can't I go if they can?"
"You're pregnant. A snakebite could mean an emergency delivery," he explained.
Megan huffed, "It's your job to protect me. If I get bitten, it's on you."
"We can't go with you because we have to guard the camp. Plus, Ms. Melissa is still asleep in her tent," the bodyguard said.
Speechless, Megan stormed to Melissa's tent, woke her up, and demanded company.
Melissa yawned, glancing at the clock. "Why are you up so early?"
