Jessica gently patted Aurelia’s hand. "You and Leopold have been through the wringer, my dear. It must be a test from the heavens. After every storm comes a calm."
Aurelia wasn't sure if she and Leopold could withstand the test. After all, those who can stay true through thick and thin are as rare as hen's teeth.
When times are tough, everyone looks after their own self-interest.
In difficult times, a poor couple can only share their struggles; the dream of sharing sweet success feels unattainable. For a middle-aged man, his ultimate wish is to climb up the social ladder, strike gold, and if luck permits, maybe even trade his old wife for a younger model.
As for the wealthy, they can share the prosperity, but they shirk from adversity. When the first hint of trouble arises, they abandon ship and scatter like dust in the wind.
"As long as Kane is safe and unharmed, I can tolerate any result." Aurelia said.
Jessica sighed. She knew all too well how much her son cared for Aurelia. He couldn't bear to be apart from her.
Three years ago, when Aurelia left, he tortured himself to the brink, spending days in the hospital.
"A child needs to be with their birth parents to thrive."
That's what Aurelia believed too. In the world of the elite, stepmothers were notorious for favoring their own blood. Everyone wants their own child to inherit the empire.
"Mr. Leopold is swamped with work, and I can't come to see Kane often, so I'm entrusting him to you."
"Don't worry, my dear. I'll keep our little Kane safe," Jessica whispered.
After Aurelia stepped out, she headed to Kane's room.
Leopold was busy tweaking a robot for Kane.
It was a small robot about half a person's height, and it looked incredibly cute. When it saw Aurelia, it glided over. "Hello, I'm Mars, the smartest artificial intelligence robot in the world," it said.
"Wow," Aurelia's eyes widened in surprise, "This robot greets people on its own?"
