Kane said, “What I mean is, he’s my twin brother, Liam. Everyone thought he was dead, but he’s alive, living all this time with Mom and Uncle Arnold.”
Aurelia was stunned. She had assumed Kane, being so young, wouldn’t have grasped the full picture. But his insights were far sharper than she had anticipated.
“Kane…” For a moment, she was at a loss for words.
Kane continued, “When I saw William, I knew right away he was my twin because we look exactly alike, and only identical twins can be that similar. He must’ve realized it too, but he didn’t want to admit it. He wanted to be Uncle Arnold’s son, not Dad’s.”
Aurelia felt her heart churn like a stormy sea.
Did William know too? Yet, he had never asked her, never mentioned a thing.
“Kane, promise Mom something. Don’t tell Dad about this, okay?”
Kane nodded. “Don’t worry, and I promised William to keep it a secret. If the bad guys don’t know who William is, he can be safe. He can play outside freely, not like me, always in danger if I step outside.”
Aurelia’s heart twisted in pain. Kane’s words piercing her like needles.
“I promise soon you’ll be free to go out and play just like William.”
When Leopold returned, Kane was already curled up in Aurelia’s arms, sleeping peacefully.
She kissed Kane’s cheek and tucked him in before tiptoeing out of the room.
“I can’t just sit around and do nothing anymore. Kane deserves a normal life.”
If her hunch was correct, this whole situation had Megan’s fingerprints all over it. The person most likely to harm Kane was Megan.
Leopold wrapped his arms around her shoulders. Once the superbug in her system was fully eradicated, he would no longer be restrained. He could then confront AK Group head-on.
