Beverley let out a sigh. "Aurelia, I've been gone six months, and you and Leopold still haven't tied the knot again?"
Aurelia choked at her words. "Don't get me started on Leopold. He's not officially single yet. And we wouldn't get back together even if he were single. He's got a new darling now."
Hope was a luxury Aurelia didn't afford when it came to Leopold. He never loved her, and he never considered her feelings in anything he did.
In her mind, she was nothing but a trophy he kept on the shelf. She would never offer Leopold her heart that could spoil the illusion of permanence.
Beverley pouted in discontent. Leopold's fling with Lana was the talk of every upper-class cocktail party. How could she not know?
"Why's Leopold such a jerk? Arnold's the one who loves you. I think you should go for Arnold. I heard he's already drafted the divorce papers with Lisa. They'll make the divorce official once Lisa has finished nursing the baby."
Aurelia sighed inwardly. Leopold's possessive nature would never allow her to be with Arnold. Besides, she had made her choice - she had to protect Kane.
Only by staying close to Leopold would Kane be safe.
A mother would do anything for her child and could even sacrifice everything she had.
Jessica had done just that to protect Leopold. She had endured being with that scoundrel Mr. Chad, giving up her youth, happiness, and the best years of her life.
Perhaps Aurelia was destined for the same path.
"I'm all about letting go and letting be," she said calmly.
Beverley pulled out a tarot deck from her purse.
"Let me give you another reading. See who your true soulmate is."
Aurelia waved her away. "No need. Some things are better left unknown."
If things between her and Leopold were doomed to be a tragic end, she preferred to remain in the dark.
A little mystery left room for hope.
