Skyler gave "William" a sidelong glance, feeling something off about him. He seemed peculiar today, different from usual, but Skyler couldn't quite put his finger on it.
Ramona picked up another box, revealing a vibrant red mushroom inside with a strikingly bright cap, dotted with white flecks.
"I know this one," Rocky chimed in, "When we eat it, we would die…”
“That's called the Fly Agaric, named for its ability to poison flies,” Skyler added.
Kane took the mushroom from Ramona, examining it closely, when William whispered in his ear so softly it was almost inaudible, "Don't bother, and you'll give the game away. I'm the one who grew it."
Kane quickly put down the box.
Skyler, with his keen senses and a Ph.D. in Psychology, noticed the odd behavior of the two. He called them aside after class, stroked his chin thoughtfully, and studied them.
"What's different about you two today?"
William and Kane exchanged a glance, trying to appear calm, "Skyler, we skipped our nap today, feeling really tired," William said, punctuating his excuse with a yawn.
Kane followed suit with a yawn of his own.
Skyler couldn't help but yawn, "I missed my nap too, got caught up playing some video games."
"We're gonna head to the restroom, but remember to come to Blossom Villa for dinner tonight. Grandma's making Maryland crab cakes," William quickly changed the subject.
Skyler loved crab cakes and nodded with a smile before he left.
William and Kane breathed a sigh of relief and dashed back to their apartment to switch back.
"Not fun," William made a face, "Aside from our looks, we're nothing alike."
"The philosopher Leibniz said there were no two identical leaves in the world. Even as identical twins, we have our differences," Kane said solemnly.
William waved him off, "Kane, we're not twins. My dad is your uncle. We look alike because we're born of the same mother, and our dads are brothers."
He had chosen Arnold to be his father, and Uncle Leopold would forever be just that, Uncle Leopold. He couldn't betray Arnold and break his heart.
