The Indifferent Ex-Husband: Heartstrings in the Mall of Fate novel Chapter 305

Sophia cracked open that yellowed paternity test report.

The blazing red "No Biological Relationship Confirmed" hit her eyes and for a moment, Sophia zoned out, a weird mix of faint disappointment and relief washing over her.

Talk about mixed feelings.

But it was the outcome she had half-expected.

Truth be told, when Brandon handed her the report two years ago, his face and reaction had pretty much spilled the beans. That's why she chose not to see it.

Later on, when she swung by the school and saw the Frost family huddling around Marian, tears spilling over, Sophia knew she was right not to look at the report. It was meaningless.

Now, opening it was just a confirmation.

Sophia couldn’t fathom why Brandon kept it, yet she felt a twinge of guilt for snooping without permission. She refolded the paper neatly and put it back in its place, then carefully shut the drawer, opened the closet, grabbed a pillow, and flopped back onto the bed.

But she was awake. She couldn't put her finger on it, just felt a bit hollow inside.

A kind of emptiness with no origin or destination.

Honestly, since she had Theresa, her hectic studies, life, and the responsibility and pressure of raising Theresa left no room to dwell on anything else. All her time and energy were allotted to studying, working, and caring for Theresa. She had no spare moments to contemplate her own existence.

It had been a long time since she pondered over who she was or where she came from. Theresa had become her everything. But maybe, having seen that paternity report and now lying awake with nothing but time, that long-lost feeling of drifting kicked in.

Sophia was never one to wallow in negativity. Realizing she was beginning to spiral, she sat up, ditching any attempt to force sleep or thoughts. She tucked the pillow back into the wardrobe.

Brandon’s habits hadn't changed; his closet was a model of organization, everything neat as a pin, corners.

Sophia wasn't as meticulous when they lived together.

She was more laid-back, content with clean and tidy without fussing over perfect symmetry.

But they weren't sharing life now, so she played by Brandon's rules, squatting down to smooth out the pillow perfectly before closing the closet and heading out.

Brandon was setting down a freshly simmered soup on the dining table.

Still in the white shirt he wore to pick her up, sleeves rolled up revealing a hint of his tanned, toned arms, he looked half homey and half business. Oddly though, those two vibes blended seamlessly on him, utterly captivating.

Sophia couldn't help but shoot him a look.

He heard the door and glanced her way.

"Up so soon?" he asked, setting aside the soup ladle.

"Just couldn't sleep. Figured I'd be better off walking around than lying in bed," Sophia said softly, approaching him. "Need a hand?"

"I’m good, just sit down and eat. Dinner's ready."
