The Indifferent Ex-Husband: Heartstrings in the Mall of Fate novel Chapter 410

Sophia instantly remembered what Brandon had mentioned about his dad having some health issues again. Her brows knitted together in concern, and she quickly dialed his number back.

"Did you drop by the hospital to check on Brandon's father today?"

"Yeah," Aaron responded, a bit puzzled, "I even brought a bunch of gifts. The old guy's in pretty good shape."

"Did you guys butt heads or something?" Sophia asked, her voice now edged with urgency, even a hint of exasperation, like she was fed up with his incompetence.

"How could that happen?" Aaron shot back confidently, "Why would I clash with him? I practically worship the ground he walks on."

Sophia wasn't buying it; Aaron had always been a loose cannon.

She hung up without another word, grabbed her Bluetooth headset from the table, put it on, and played the audio files Aaron had sent over.

The start was fine, just polite small talk, everyone keeping up appearances until Aaron brought up Theresa and his belief that she and Brandon were so lovey-dovey. That's when Daniel's defenses started to crumble.

"Who told you they got back together? No way, that kid doesn't belong to my family. Brandon's about to tie the knot with the Frost family's youngest daughter. They've been sweethearts since childhood, and both families have already settled the wedding plans."

As Daniel's scoff reached her ears, Sophia's gaze drifted, landing on the peacefully sleeping Theresa. Her look was complex, her emotions a tangled web, especially when Daniel mentioned that Sophia only married Brandon because of an unexpected pregnancy, and to fulfill Brandon's grandfather's last wish. At that point, Sophia felt nothing but numbness.

The response she had anticipated.

It wasn't until Daniel said, "I wouldn't want her to ruin our family name," that Sophia felt a sting in her heart, her eyes resting on Theresa's serene face, her throat tightening with emotions she couldn't quite identify.

Aaron's text came through right then. [Finished listening? See, they've laid it out for you, and you're still clueless, not thinking of how to suck up to your in-laws. They are always so high and mighty, how do you expect them to truly accept you?]

[Is your self-respect really worth that little? They've made their disdain for you crystal clear, and you're still itching to get in their faces?] Sophia shot back

[I've done nothing wrong, no need for reflection. And you don't need to update me on your chats with them. If you really feel sorry for me, then stop bothering them.]
