The plan was to meet up late in the morning, almost noon.
Sophia left the house without giving Amanda a heads-up. She wasn't fully recovered, and Amanda was not comfortable with the idea of her stepping out alone. Amanda would have insisted on tagging along no matter what.
Sophia wasn't sure if she used to be a lone wolf, but she really wasn't used to having Amanda on her tail. So she figured she'd sneak out and just shoot Amanda a text later – better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
But just as she was sneaking out, she bumped into Amanda, who was on her way to check on her.
"Sophia, it's freezing out there, where are you heading?" Amanda asked, puzzled as she saw Sophia all dolled up for going out. Noticing that Sophia's scarf wasn't snuggly wrapped, she couldn't help but step forward to fix it for her while fretting, "It's gotten colder today and there's no sun. Don't catch a chill in the wind."
Amanda's concern was genuine, but she was totally babying her. Sophia wasn't all that comfortable with this kind of coddling, so she just wrapped her scarf tighter and murmured a thank you.
Amanda, for her part, was used to this and didn't really care where Sophia was going. She just naturally started to follow Sophia out, clearly planning to join her.
Sophia had no choice but to stop her: "Godmom."
"I've got some stuff to take care of today, and I need to do it alone. It's chilly, so you should stay in and relax. I'll hang out with you once I'm done, okay?"
Sophia spoke softly. She was truly grateful to her godmother, who had saved her and been by her side, taking care of her when she was too sick to fend for herself. Even her plea was gentle.
