Merlin said, "If Miss Golding did have the medicine to save Lord Acker, why didn't she give it to you directly? She should know that you were downstairs."
Then, he added, "Also, she didn't leave right after you left. She waited until I left before making a move. It feels like she’s avoiding you on purpose.”
"That’s..." Christian couldn't answer.
Finally, he surmised, "Maybe she was afraid that I wouldn't believe her if she gave me the medicine right there and then? I might not accept it, too. Even if I did, would I give it to my father?"
Merlin sighed. "Perhaps so. Still, something feels a little off. Nothing is logical here.”
Christian urged, “Okay, then don't overthink anymore. I've just seen the latest news. The Fox family’s spokesperson announced to the public about a press conference at eight in the morning. It would be broadcast live nationwide. I guess the newly appointed little girl is going to turn the tide.”
Merlin laughed. "Turn the tide... I don't think anyone can fix this mess."
Christian said, “If she makes the right move, there's still a chance. We'll see if this little girl has the courage."
Merlin laughed. "I look forward to seeing the little girl’s courage! If she can turn the tide and ease the public’s anger, she'll be doing me a favor. Otherwise, I'll be d*mned worried..."
Merlin then complained, "Homer and Finley's death brought more troubles to light. So many innocent young girls were murdered. These cases have brought a huge embarrassment to the New York police..."
Christian said, "Fortunately, those young girls didn't disappear in New York. At the very least, you can excuse yourself for that."
Then, Christian reminded him, "By the way, Lammy. You have to find a way to stabilize the situation first and not let it worsen."
"Yes," Merlin said. "I'll hold a morning meeting with them in a while, and show a clear attitude. No one else in New York should die because of this incident."
As soon as he said that, a subordinate rushed in without knocking. He exclaimed in a panic, "Sir, something bad has happened!”
Merlin felt a throbbing pain in his head at this worrisome exclamation. He thought he was mentally strong, but the constant flurry of bad news was hurting him greatly. He had heard so much bad news in such a short time that he felt mentally fatigued.
He could only bite the bullet and ask," Again? What the h*ll happened?!"
The subordinate replied in a fluster," Someone found more than a dozen floating corpses at the end of Hudson River. Each corpse had a buoy tied to them, and their bodies were tied with iron chains connected to lead blocks that had sunk to the bottom of the water. The murderer deliberately let them float not far from the water’s surface. A few boats saw some things moving in the water in the morning and thought it was a large fish, but discovered that it was actually dead people "What the f*ck?!" Merlin jumped to his feet and roared, "How did so many people die?! Have we confirmed the identities of the deceased?"
"We have," the subordinate said nervously." The nearest branch has already sent some of our men there. After a preliminary investigation of the scene, we’ve confirmed that almost all of the deceased are well-known figures in New York, as well as the sons of major families..."
"Among them is the Rothschild family's heir, the eldest son of the Hudson family, the Brandt family's son-in-law, an English nobleman..."
