I smiled politely. "I forgot to ask, but was there a reason you specifically called me out?"
Chloe answered my question with one of her own, "I heard that you no longer like Steven?"
I replied calmly, "Yes."
Chloe slammed her hand on the table and stood up, asking angrily, "What right do you have to look down on him?"
"Isn't it obvious?" I replied unhurriedly. "You've witnessed all the things he's done to me. I don't recall any one incident that would prompt me to continue liking him. Do you?"
The moment the words were out of my mouth, I got up to leave.
The anger burning in Chloe's gut disappeared in an instant.
Upon seeing I was about to leave, she called out hurriedly, her voice pitching higher and higher as she spoke, "Even if what he's done was indeed wrong, you can't just give up on him so easily!"
I looked back at her, asking, "Is six years a short time?"
How many times could one go through six years of life in a single lifetime?
Chloe replied sourly, "It isn't, yet you still stuck with him for so long. So, who knows if you weren't already seeing someone else…"
From the looks of it, she was planning to throw me under the bus.
Noticing that there were many people looking our way from the corner of my eye, I said calmly, "You can certainly afford to be louder."
Chloe assumed that I was scared, and she said smugly, "If you didn't do anything wrong, would you be afraid of others overhearing our discussion?"
She acted all self-righteously, as if I really had done something wrong.
Still calm, I replied, "Then, go ahead and say your piece. Once you're done, it'll be my turn to reveal everything Steven has done."
As I spoke, I returned to my seat on the coffeehouse's couch.
"At that point, the reputation of his company will be damaged, and the company share prices will fall, which means you'll hardly be able to enjoy life as you have up till now, either."
